Called one of ‘the decade’s design classics’ by The Sunday Times, this hard-wearing porcelain mortar and pestle has a shallow, plate like base for more range of motion when grinding a variety of spices and pastes.

    ---DETAILS---

John Julian has mastered the art of English ceramics, from DNA to design. The clay, predominantly dug in Cornwall, is made in Stoke-on-Trent and then hand-thrown in a Wiltshire studio by skilled artisans. At John Julian, ceramics are made in small batches and fired once at a high temperature as opposed to the more common practice of firing twice. In addition to conserving energy, this makes every piece less susceptible to cracks and chips, ready to last a lifetime and longer. This hard-wearing mortar and pestle, which has been thrown by hand on a potter’s wheel, is made to be used heavily. It is highly resistant to odour and staining, making it ideal for mixes that contain oil, like pesto, compound butters and chimichurri.

    ---BENEFITS---

'John Julian worked with granite stone masons in India, learning their time-honoured craft, before creating a homespun version of it with porcelain to keep production in the UK. Praised by the likes of Nigel Slater and Nigella Lawson, it’s just as functional as it is beautiful.'
